All the fun of the Govan Fair

Govan Fair parade1

THEY came, they saw . . . they cheered and clapped and waved their flags.
Thousands of Govanites took to the streets last Friday to enjoy the spectacle of the Govan Fair parade.
And the universal view was that it was one of the best ever.
Barely half an hour after being crowned, Govan Fair Queen Abbie Hunter took to a horse-drawn carriage to lead off the procession.
With Councillor Stephen Dornan and the Sheep’s Heid out in front, closely followed by the Salvation Army band, the giant procession slowly made its way from Fairley Street to Arklet Road.
St Francis Pipe Band from the Gorbals were in fine tune, and the Lintie Stompers linedancers were pretty in their pink hats.

Saints defender Mansare clears v Benburb

BENBURB will play next
season in the Central District Second Division after suffering the heartache of relegation.
The Govanites were condemned to the big drop when they were pipped by league champions Rutherglen Glencairn at their impressive New Southcroft Park stadium.
The Bens had shown their sporting side by applauding the homesters on to the pitch. But Glencairn showed no mercy to the struggling Southsiders, forging ahead on the half-hour mark.
And they doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half.
Bens then showed their fighting spirit, with Andy Dailly pulling one back with a superb effort before the gallant visitors went agonisingly close to grabbing an equaliser.
